1959 Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe Outlaw (T2 A) by Reutter VIN: 105421 According to the Porsche Kardex, 105421 is a US delivery car with sunroof, sealed beam headlamps and US spec bumpers built in November of 1958. It first owner is listed as Frank R. Beam of Tucson, Arizona. It appears that before the car's delivery to him the original engine was swapped out by the importer, Hoffman in New York, for an upgraded S engine, #83155. After Beam the car had a couple of west coast owners, and was finally purchased by John Denyer of Michigan in 1995. Denyer was an avid 356 owner who attended a multitude of 356 Holidays, shows and concours with the car. Every year of ownership he would set about improving 105421. He began by giving the car a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration in 1996. The car was disassembled down to the tub and rebuilt piece by restored piece. The car was reshot in its original silver metallic, and a completely new red leather interior was installed. During that process he set aside the original S engine and 644 transmission, and had a later SC engine and 741 gearbox built for the car by the 356 Guru, Vic Skirmants at 356 Enterprises. The engine received a forged big bore kit, with 86mm Shasta pistons bringing the displacement up to 1720cc and compression up to 9.5:1. The heads were flowed and the twin 40 Solex carberetors rebuilt. The transmission was completely rebuilt and included a 3A third gear with a tall 4thgear for easier long distance travel. Over the next decade Denyer would make other improvements to the 356 including alloy Rudge style knock offs, a custom wood-rimmed Porsche steering wheel, Hella fog lights, an external oil cooler, a Tab Tech 911 fan kit, and Skirmants' camber compensator. In the 15 years of his ownership the car covered less than 15,000 miles, mostly to shows and 356 Holidays. During that time he reports the car ran impeccably and never gave any issues. The original engine is included with the car. After driving the car for the first time Bruce Canepa was impressed by the incredible performance of the high-horsepower motor, claiming it was one of the best four-cylinder 356A outlaws he has ever driven. -
