1995 Ferrari 333 SP Chassis: F130E-010 Exactly 20 years after Ferrari last raced a sports prototype, the Maranello based firm surprised the world with the 333 SP in 1993. Jointly developed with Dallara, it was Ferrari's first new prototype racer in over two decades. Designed specifically for the new IMSA prototype regulations, the 333 SP was intended for customer racing only in the new World Sports Car category. F130E-010 is the one of the original 14 cars developed and built by Dallara in conjunction with Ferrari. Its career spanned from 1995 to 1997, where it appeared at some of the most important endurance races in the world. First raced in 1995 for the Scandia Racing Team, chassis 10 would take seven podium positions for the team, and be the fastest qualifier at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Its dominant performance would help Ferrari clinch the IMSA Manufacturers Championship in 1995. In 1996 Scandia would take F130E-010 to a convincing second place at the 12 Hours of Sebring. For the remainder of the season Scandia would run the car for the Racing for Belgium team. As a part of the celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium, a group of private Belgian sponsors entrusted the car to a team of Belgian drivers to run it in the 24 hours of Le Mans. The team of Gossens, van de Poele, and Bachelart would take 1st place in the Le Mans Prequalifying. During the race van de Poele would set the lap record, and the team would be within 4 laps of the leaders after racing through the night. Unfortunately a small mistake by Bachelart in the morning put them out of the race. For 1997 the Momo Corso Team took the reigns of chassis #10. Giampiero Moretti, founder of MOMO, was one of the originators of the 333SP project and had been racing them from the outset. Under their banner F130E-010 took another 8 podium finishes including a 3rd in class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After its retirement in 1997, the car was brought to the United States, and sold to a Ferrari collector. It has been in his possession ever since. About the 333SP The impulse for the project was given by Giampiero Moretti, founder of MOMO and Gian Luigi Buitoni, president of Ferrari North America. The program was nick-named 'Il Sogno Americano', the American Dream. IMSA regulations specified that the engine used could not displace over four litres and had to be derived from a road car. The V12 used was similar in design to Ferrari's 1992 Ferrari F92A Formula One car, enlarged to 4.0 L, with power around 600 bhp. It was allowed through homologation because it would power the upcoming Ferrari F50 road car. All technical aspects, like the 5 valves per cylinder setup, were retained for both the F50 and 333 SP engine. Following the regulations, the 333 SP featured a flat bottom chassis. Carbon-fibre and other composites were used for the chassis and body, resulting in a very light but rigid monocoque construction. Double wishbones and push-rod operated coil springs-dampers were used all-round. The rolling chassis was not much different from the contemporary F1 designs, except for the increased width to accommodate a 'passenger.' The 333 SP's performance and great reliability record made it a popular pick among sports car racers. By the end of its career only 40 examples were produced. The first 14 cars were constructed by Dallara, the next 26 by Michelotto. Spanning over eight seasons, the 333 SP's racing car was not only remarkably long but also very successful. Between 1994 and 2002, the car won major championships on both sides of the Atlantic, scoring 56 outright victories along the way. It was also among the very first of a new generation of sports racers and its influence is still visible to this day. The 333 SP certainly ranks among the finest Ferrari racing car and the howl of its sophisticated is still without equal.
